2009-2010 Activities Report
In 2009-2010, the last year of its three-year mandate, the WMRC Users Committee was sad to lose its co-president Deppy Papandreou, who resigned after having been instrumental in shaping the Committee and advancing the cause of users’ rights.
The Committee did continue to strengthen its role within the organization, however, and pursued the following initiatives:
- Increasing awareness of the Users Committee
- Annual information and training session
- Promotion of the Users’ Committee through a Christmas card campaign, an information/social activity and regular information sessions
- Sponsorship of the annual barbecue and information day hosted by the Department of Child and Family Services
- Contribution to the WMRC 2010-2015 Strategic Plan.
Furthering partnerships
- Sponsorship of the WMRC Parent Committee for Adult Services to provide a forum for information-sharing and review of service requirements
- Active involvement in the new Association québécoise des comités des usagers des centres de réadaptation en déficience intellectuelle/troubles envahissants du développement (AQCUCRDI-TED)
- Participation in the “People First Quebec Conference” in Quebec City.
Promoting users’ rights
- Accompaniment of two parents in the complaints process
- Letter sent to Lakeshore GeneralHospital management requesting that an X-Ray machine be installed in the operating room, so that users with challenging behaviours may receive a complete dental evaluation prior to treatment or surgery
- Satisfaction questionnaires sent to all users and parents, with a final report due in June 2010.
Informing parents
- Sponsorship of an information session on financial planning
- Support of WMRC’s residential services information session for parents.
Supporting community events
- Autism Awareness Gala
- Special Olympics Quebec Spaghetti Dinner
- WIAIH Annual Family Social
Many thanks to all our committee members for their ongoing support and commitment!
